Malaysia, the Philippines, North Borneo and Sarawak.

on drug addiction, trafficking, and on individual drives to curtail
the production of Opium, Hashish and Cocaine.

Part 1:
Files for 1950-1954
This microfilm
project focuses on the dramatic growth achieved in Brunei, Hong Kong,
Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan between the years 1950-1980.
This collection of Public Record Office material includes Cabinet papers,
Colonial, Dominions and Foreign Office files as well as Treasury documents.
This series
will form a prime source for social, political and economic historians
studying economic development in South and South East Asia.
Part 1 covers
1950-1954, a period that witnessed the onset of the Cold War and conflict
in Korea. Many Asian countries concerned were either recovering from
Japanese occupation or trying to shake off their colonial past. The
new communist regime in mainland China also put immense pressure on
the whole area.
There is
much on the Colombo Plan and on conferences in 'Mallaig', Singapore
and Bukit Serene in Malaya. Topics covered include rice growing across
the region, rubber production in Malaya, oil drilling off Brunei, and
relations between Hong Kong and mainland China. There is also material
on American aid and the implications of their policy towards Taiwan
and Korea.
Part 2: Files
for 1955-1958
This microfilm
project focuses on the dramatic growth achieved in Brunei, Hong Kong,
Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan between the years 1950-1980.

economic development in South and South East Asia.
Part 2 covers the
years 1955-1958, a period that saw the Cold War crisis deepen and the
aftermath of conflict in Korea. The consolidation of the communist regime
continued in China, and this had repercussions for the economy of South
East Asia.
There is material
on the Colombo Plan, border disputes in Borneo, the establishment of
a Central Bank in Malaya, Mutual Aid, oil licences, industrial development
in Hong Kong, Malayan rubber, a new trade plan between Taiwan and Japan,
and meetings of Commonwealth Prime Ministers.
Part 3: Files
for 1959-1962
This microfilm
project focuses on the dramatic growth achieved in Brunei, Hong Kong,
Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan between the years 1950-1980.

Part 3 covers the
years 1959-1962, a period that saw continued expansion in Hong Kong
(mostly of labour intensive manufactured goods), massive US assistance
in Taiwan and South Korea, and plans for regional co-operation from
the newly independent Federation of Malaya.
There is material
on natural gas, electrical power, the Eden Hall conference in Singapore,
GATT, IBRD loans, oil, rubber, sugar and rice.
